And on Day 9… Banksy's Gorilla Has Let the Animals Out of the London Zoo

And on Day 9... Banksy's Gorilla Has Let the Animals Out of the London Zoo
Hey, we were right to call it Banksy’s London Street Zoo all along. After 8 days of painting around London with different stenciled animals, today, Day 9, sees Banksy head to the London Zoo to paint a gorilla letting the animals out of confinement. If this is the last day of the Street Zoo, it has actually been a nice distraction during the doldrums of summer art activity, a good reminder of the animals we have captured and kept in captivity would much rather be roaming free, a good conversation to have with the kids about the environment and climate change. Perhaps even better just a wink to treat the streets as a giant playground, as it should always have…

And on Day 8… Banksy Paints a Rhino

And on Day 8... Banksy Paints a Rhino
Are we having fun? At the artist Banksy’s suggestion, we are having a little fun as go across the English capital (or UK capital if you want, it is, indeed, the capital of both) in Banksy’s London Street Zoo. The rhino, cleverly placed atop an old car, is on Westmoor Street in Charlton, south-east London. As it pertains to yesterday’s piranhas piece, the Guardian noted, “In the historic courts, Judge Mark Lucraft KC discharged a jury after it failed to reach a verdict in a death by careless driving trial and suggested they might enjoy the warm weather with a visit to the nearby Banksy instead.” Might be a tad bit of morose fun, there…

And on Day 7… Banksy Paints Piranhas

And on Day 7... Banksy Paints Piranhas
On day 7, Banksy painted swimming piranhas on a phone box in the City of London Police “sentry” box as part of the Banksy’s London Street Zoo. He mentioned something about uplifting the people, and I do feel, in my heart of hearts, that swimming piranhas might be slightly on the menacing side, but I haven’t swam with piranhas in a bit.

Radio Juxtapoz, ep 124: David Shrigley Just Made Pulped Fiction

Radio Juxtapoz, ep 124: David Shrigley Just Made Pulped Fiction
There doesn’t seem to be anything more 1984 than taking what was one of the most popular selling books of the 21st century and printing an alternative text upon its ashes. There is that wonderful moment in Orwell’s masterwork that reads “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

Banksy To Release Screenprint Edition for Ukraine Benefit

Banksy To Release Screenprint Edition for Ukraine Benefit
One of the world’s most famous artists, Banksy, who recently released a series of images and photos from his stencils he painted in Borodyanka, Ukraine, has now teamed with Legacy of War Foundation for a screen print in an edition of 50 to help their support efforts for the ongoing war. “In Ukraine I saw a Legacy of War team sweep in and provide medical attention, heaters, fresh water and a friendly face to some very desperate people in a bombed out building,” Banksy said of his support. “They also lent me one of their ambulances to work from, which turned out to be extremely useful when an angry babushka found me painting on her building and called the Police.…

Andrea Modica: Theatrum Equorum

Andrea Modica: Theatrum Equorum
Many curious feelings arise from the photographs in Andrea Modica’s new book, Theatrum Equorum. They emerge slowly, and sometimes surprisingly, between intentionally repetitive images of horses lying in repose, resting on beds of shredded paper, enclosed by dark, and featureless walls. It isn’t a context where we are accustomed to seeing horses. They are supposed to be outdoors, in a field, trotting off into the sunset. Still lifes made up of crude-looking surgical tools, presumably used to operate on these majestical creatures are interspersed, sometimes arranged carefully, other times in scattered, bloody piles.

Waves of Light: An Interview with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb

Waves of Light: An Interview with Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb
As the holidays approach, many of us are returning home or gathering with our families again. Maybe it’s friends that gather or maybe it’s solitude that awaits, either way, thoughts are drifting to a different sort of place, one a little further removed from the day-to-day of our lives. It has almost been three years since the first Covid lockdowns began, when our families, friends, and solitude were suddenly sitting in front of us, against the backdrop of a very different world. A lot has changed and very little has changed since then, but it seems like a good time to remind ourselves of what that shift was like, what we’ve held on to from that time, and what we’ve…

Radio Juxtapoz, ep 099: Moral Fibres as Love Welcomes and Migrate Art Come Together

Radio Juxtapoz, ep 099: Moral Fibres as Love Welcomes and Migrate Art Come Together
In celebration of the Moral Fibres collaboration between the charitable organizations Migrate Art and Love Welcomes, Radio Juxtapoz took a moment to speak on how they each have found a place in both the art world and philanthropic, activist spaces. As the two created a series of scarfs with the artists Chloe Early, Lakwena, Camille Walala and Sara Shamma, where each designed a “beautiful crepe de chine silk scarf, handmade by the incredible team of refugee women at Love Welcomes,” we found a moment to highlight the project and learn more about what goes into each companies ethos.
